Here is something that I hope goes away in Next... The requirement to zoom in to see POIs (at least be able to disable it).

Posted this suggestion in the General Discussion forum...

Suggestion: Don't require zoom to see POIs

@StefanHummelink Helemaal mee eens.

Continuing the theme of finding inspiration by looking at the competition... I've been glancing through Scenic's documentation and videos. Thought I might jot down some difference that may be worth noting. If I note something that differs between the two apps, but there isn't really a difference - I just missed the feature in MRA Navigation - let me know.

A couple of glaring differences... First, Scenic doesn't have it's own web based route/trip planner. However, it's not necessary really. Scenic's interoperability/integration with other planners (to include Furkot) makes it a minor point. Second, Scenic doesn't have any traffic capabilities. Advantage MRA Navigation.

            Settings:

            • Scenic has Show Compass on Map and Show Map Scale settings. Those might be handy. Points to Scenic.
            • Map Styles. Scenic allows you to select various. I don't know about anybody else, but when you zoom out a little bit on the map in MRA Navigation, you can't see any roads. Even when you are zoomed in, the roads can still be hard to see depending on the lighting (re. out in the sun). Having different map styles to improve readability might be handy.
            • Detour behavior. Scenic handles detours? Might be handy.
            • Scenic's Via Point Pro Mode. Allows user control of shaping point visibility. I've mentioned this before. Point to Scenic.

That it's for the moment (the wife is after me). More to come later...

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Place random 'suggestions' in seperate topics, that way we can tag them and keep them marked for later use. That way, every suggestion has it's own 'on topic' discussion! keep in mind that we have a tight schedule until June 1, 2023. But after that, anything is possible again, so don't hold back!

              EDIT 05/09 by Timo:
Locked topic and edited rules so that suggestions are posted in seperate topics.

Speed cameras are already included with the current MRA Navigation so I would presume that speed cameras would automatically feature in MRA Navigation Next

More looks at the competition etc...

Route list in MRA Navigation... either via Route planning or Navigation and tracking/Routes...

There is no sorting available. It only displays the last route open at the top. Scenic allows you to sort this via name, date, distance.

MRA Navigation Route list also doesn't appear to do folders.

Looking at the new MRA Mobile... It's route list is sortable, but only by name - which is too limited. It also does folders.

The main menu of MRA Mobile also brings up another point... What's the word I'm looking for here... Bifurcation? Anyway... You have a Route Lab button on the main menu that takes you to the web based route lab which offers the same menu options that are on the main menu of MRA Mobile. What's the point of this?

In fact, all things in the MRA Mobile menus seem to lead you back to the web based version (Edit for example). This is fine I guess if the everything you need on the web based version works/displays well on a mobile device (don't bother trying to look at a route in landscape). Another note... the progress bar doesn't seem to display in portrait mode.

I've already mentioned somewhere that when you are taken to the web based display of the routes via MRA Mobile that the spawned browser doesn't seem to have location access permissions and there doesn't seem to be a way to grant those permission. So, this makes the current usability of the MRA Mobile app more limited (beyond off road navigation - bike trails, hiking maybe - it seems to have no value). You are better off just opening your browser - which you can give location permissions to - and going directly to the MRA website to do things like route editing etc.

Continuing on with my previous exercise (perhaps up until the wife catches me).

Scenic can display both speed and elevation profiles. MRA Navigation can do neither. I don't know if the speed profile in Scenic is based on track data or speed limit data in the base map (might be nice to be able to select either).

Search: Scenic will search via multiple sources (Google Maps, Apple Maps and OpenStreetMaps) within a 10km radius (presume it's miles if this unit is selected) and display a list of results. MRA Navigation will do the same (although it's mechanized differently). What are MRA Navigation sources? Anyway... Here's were Scenic takes it further... When you search via POI categories (say Gas or Fuel for example) Scenic will produce list results sorted by distance - as does MRA Navigation. But Scenic also provides a button that will show the search results on the current map. This would be super handy. It's easier to pick what might be the best POI to choose (say gas station for example) based on seeing where the POIs are on the map vs. picking one from a list. I guess the only way to accomplish something similar in MRA is to get out of Navigation and open up the web based route planner via a browser. You would have to modify the route there (if you wanted to add a POI as a waypoint to a route), and then go back into Navigation to see the change. I don't suppose you will be doing any of this if you don't have an internet connection.

What about MRA Mobile? Well I understand it's a fledgling work in progress. At the moment it has a simple search that produces list results (presumably sorted by distance). You can create a quick route to a search result in the list and that seems to be about it. Anything beyond that and you got to go into the web based route planner.

@Tim-Thompson That indeed is definitely something we wish to implement! Thanks for sharing your input πŸ™‚

With our search functionality you can now quickly search MRA favorites / routes / tracks and general adresses / locations. They are indeed sorted by distance from your current location.

It would be very nice to extend this feature a lot!

Edit: When selecting a location we generate an A - B for which you can select the curviness. We actually hope to implement a feature to add stops in between so you can go A - B - C. View our Navigation next roadmap for planning regarding the route-generator or route editor within the app.

I don't see that capability in either MRA Navigation or Mobile. It appears the closest you can come to accessing this feature is on the web based Route Lab accessed via a browser. However, on a mobile (Android), you don't get the "Create a scenic route" dialog when you go to the Route Lab. So, it doesn't appear you can do this on a mobile device. Did I miss something?

Now generating a Roundtour is something you can do on the mobile, but only via MRA Mobile or accessing the Route Lab on a mobile browser. You can't do this in MRA Navigation.

                                Edit:

I do note that if you select OpenStreeMaps you can go to the Toolkit and select Curves in the Routing Options. This appears to be a silver subscription feature (I don't have that) and I don't see any information on it in the documentation - so I can't see how it really works. Since I generally have it set to HERE maps, I didn't see this.

Another comment about sorting route list...

If you are looking at the route list on the web based Route Lab (on your mobile device via a browser), your sorting is limited. In portrait view, you only have access to sort by name because this is the only option that is in view. Rotating to landscape gives you access to Type, Privacy, and Changed. Distance and Duration are still cut off and appear inaccessible.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ This is indeed the intention, both the 'follow the track' and a fully dynamic 'turn-by-turn' navigation mode will eventually end up in mobile. The simple 'follow the track' mode is not only very useful for walkers and cyclists, but also for example for groups of motorcyclists or car drivers who drive close to each other: then you as a 'follower' may not even want to see all those instructions but just the planned route.

It is also a nice side effect that the app cannot suddenly think that a traffic jam is created and then send all kinds of users in other directions. That is a frequently heard criticism that I fortunately also see on every other platform. We also come up with a solution in the form of 'group rides'.
