Offline navigation: two meanings & how
-
There are two meanings to offline maps that I can think of (there may be more):
-
- I actively want to avoid connecting to the internet whilst navigating (no SIM, no credit or similar), so everything to navigate (maps, route, etc) must be available offline
-
- I want to be able to navigate even if signal is patchy, i.e. my device has gone offline for say 20 minutes in the mountains
I don't quite understand the differences, in terms of which options need to be set.
Please can someone smart define the steps / settings for each of the above scenarios?
(I can almost guess, but it's difficult to prove without being in a real world situation, and then it's a bit late!)
Secondly, what are the limitations? Is it just dynamic routing to avoid traffic, closed roads, or are there other disadvnatages?
And if there's a manual page on this, then shoot me down - but only having first pasted the link here.
Thanks in advance.

@richtea999 good question!
So the first is really just you making sure that you've downloaded the relevant regions. Having the routes downloaded for offline use is a good idea in the event you really have no internet at all - just so you can reload the route.
Offline mode prevents the navigation module from making any internet connection. This results in no traffic information and track navigation won't work anymore but besides that, everything works as expected.
Situation 2 is impossible. The app will approximate your location when reception is bad (eg. tunnels) but this won't as long as you indicate. If you drive 20 minutes without any reception (GPS), your location will just seem stuck. I'd say a minute or so (maximum) without GPS might work. Do note there will be a difference between straight tunnels (where the app can predict loss of reception) and no reception at all.

Do you mean GPS signal or Internet?

@richtea999 Assuming you mean offline in terms of internet connectivity (not GPS), the 2 situations aren't that different. MRA doesn't automatically switch to offline mode when internet connectivity is unavailable or patchy, so you'll have to manually switch to offline mode in both situations (and prepare for them in the same way, i.e. download maps and routes).

in menu offline maps it is not possible to update!
I'm using Version 4.0.2. - 203 -

I believe this to be incorrect.
If manually set to offline, the app will never automatically switch to online (conscious decision to NOT use any data).
If manually set to online, the app will automatically switch to offline if a connection is temporarily unavailable. It will check every two minutes if it can go online again. -

Correct! I mean not connected to the internet. GPS is always connected except in extreme circumstances (tunnels and high-rise cities), whereas internet connectivity can be quite intermittent even in the crowded UK.
I was trying to understand what settings & process are needed for:
- users that don't want to be connected to the internet during a ride, but still want to navigate
- users that want to be connected but the connection is missing / intermittent
In our group we have both types of user, and it would be good to make sure everyone has the correct settings. For example, today someone had the maps downloaded but didn't realise they needed to also download the route. Luckily that slip was caught before setting off.

I'm using Version 4.0.2. - 203Seen the same since a few weeks. Today my phone accept to update application, I hope this will disappear. Can only be seen when store maps on SD is on.

@Bruno-Friedmann I reinstalled MRA and now it works again
