Creating a new route while offline
-
I have experience creating routes while online (Web or Next), and then setting things up for offline use. Meaning, map and route are downloaded to enable riding anywhere. I've done this many times, and the function works as advertised. No issues there.
My question is about creating a new route in Next when I'm 50 miles from any civilization -- no cell/data connection exists. Can I get off the bike, sit down, and create a new route in this scenario? I suspect not, but maybe the capability exists.
I tried numerous searches to a get a specific yes/no, but I couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance for input.

@John-S-Parry No, that is not possible at the moment. The planner is web-based. You use the logic on the website. No data connection? Then no planning either. Perhaps in the (near) future, that functionality will be available. Especially if you lack an internet connection but still want to plan, some form of synchronization would be useful once you are back online. In the meantime, you can continue working offline.

@Rob-Verhoeff Thanks Rob. Again, I suspected that was the answer. It's consistent with most other navigation phone app functionality.
And it's not something that's needed most of the time. But there are always exceptions. I was recently riding across the Southern Sierra in California (no cell service) when I hit an unexpected road closure. It's an area of snaking side roads not well marked, and definitely not a situation to simply pick one out and hope for the best. I instinctively went into my dedicated GPS (Trip Planner app on my Garmin Zumo XT) and was able to quickly route my way out of that hole. I didn't think about looking at MRA Next at the time, but it got thinking, and therefore this inquiry.
Thanks again.

forgive my ignorance here, but i am sure the new route planner with the next app allows for route planning with no internet access.
please correct me if i am wrong @Rob-Verhoeff
i have tried planning routes on the next app with no internet access and planning of a route and navigation is possible. -

Since the app-planner (Routelab on the website) is web-based you do need an internetconnection for cereating and changing routes. You can simply test that yourself by killing the internetconnection on your device.

i totally agree , but the OP was enquiring about the next app, which does have the ability to plan and navigate routes with no internet connection.
at least in my experience

An offline route planner for the app is currently being tested in BETA - watch this space

@paul69 I completely turned off Internet access on my iPhone. @Rob-Verhoeff is correct -- you can't create a route when offline. In Next, you get a message "No Internet" when you attempt to do so. I should have done this test before reaching out.
@Nick-Carthew thanks for the update.

hi @Nick-Carthew
that would explain why i am able to plan and navigate a route with no internet access.
benefits of being a beta tester i suppose,
sorry @John-S-Parry for the duff info i wasn't aware it was not available to all -
@paul69 No problem. It's all about getting to the right answer. Thanks for your input.
