You can choose the WP to start from very easily even after you started the route. Just long press any WP.

Totally agree with you.

But my opnion. A navigation needs to guide you not the other way around.
In the current situation you need to be sure the setting is correct before you start the route. Otherwise you need extra steps to correct your error. Just because this setting is not always visible (you need to think for the navigation).
By choosing for a prompt. You made aware you need to make a choice (navigation guides you). Less change for an error.

The amount of information visible in the route-options panel in your first post is largely dependent on the aspect of your screen. Some phone show a little more, my Pixel does:

Did i already say because of the question there is less change of an error. You are more aware what is going to happen.

Actually I don't. I usually start a route at WP1, and the app remembers the last used setting
But yeah, it would be nice to have it in plain sight when starting route.

maybe it is solution to move up de pop up off start so the option below it are visuable.
