Problem with announcing via points
-
Unfortunately, I can’t get the via points in a route to be spoken aloud. As far as I know, this should be possible, and I believe you can even set it so that an announcement is made at a certain distance before reaching the via point. However, when I enter text in the “Rename” field or in the “Note” field, it is not spoken.
In the settings, the audio delay is set to 0.2 and the route point notifications are set to “Via,” so that doesn’t seem to be the issue. I suspect I’m overlooking something, but no matter what I try, I can’t get it to work.
Could someone please explain in a clear, step-by-step way how to set this up correctly?
@Gerard-van-der-Veer hi Gerard
Can you share a screenshot from your audio settings do we can see what its like on your device -

@Gerard-van-der-Veer do you have special characters, or numbers in the text of your via points; may in the beginning of the text?
If you have set in properties, the option to name an enterd waypoint (route point) automatically - MRA enters to postal address (incl. street and number) into the name field. I believe, this will not be announced later, during navigation...

Shaping points (teardrop) and via points (hand) will display and announce their titles and notes at different distances.
Shaping points will display and read aloud their information at 750 metres before their position, via points display and read aloud their information at 2000 metres.
But only if there are no other route points within those distances.
In my example, the information in via point 4 will not begin until passing route point 3 as the distance is under 2000 kilometres and it is a via point.
The information for shaping point 5 will begin when you are 750 metres from it as there are no other route points within 750 metres.
The scale in the bottom left corner of the map will give you an approximate idea of distances.

Great! This is clear information — Thanks!
So if I understand correctly: I only want information at via points, and I want that information to be announced later than 2000 meters before the via point. So in that case, I need to place a shaping point within those 2000 meters before the via point.
Is that correct?
And where is the best place to put that information: under “Rename,” under “Note,” or both?

Correct.
You can use both. Example: Fuel stop in the name and Fill your tank and buy some food from the BP service station. as the note.

Thanks Nick!
Very clear!
Thanks again!

I tested it and noticed the following: when I place a shaping point, for example 500 meters before a via point, I would expect to hear the information about that via point only at that moment. However, I am already hearing the information at a distance of 2000 meters.
I have tried this with several different routes, and it does not seem to make any difference whether there is a shaping point before the via point or not. The announcement always starts at 2000 meters.
What could be causing this?

Hi @Gerard-van-der-Veer this post has some useful info on when announcements are made

@Gerard-van-der-Veer Your original problem was that you could not hear the announcements, now you can - problem solved

Hi Nick, totally agree — really great!
But I’m now wondering how it’s possible that I already hear the information at 2000 meters, even though I set a shaping point about 1000 meters before the via point. -

I must admit that it has been some time since I used this feature, and I do try to plan my routes accordingly, so it may have changed now. @Con-Hennekens is more up to date, he may be able to answer or offer a solution.

Okay Rick, thanks again so much. Maybe others know how this exactly works.
Talk to you sometime! -

Well I am not so certain of that

@Gerard-van-der-Veer, Are you saying that you hear the name and/or note of a via point at 2000 mtrs, while there still is a shaping point in between at 500 mtrs? It is my understanding that audible notes should wait until they are next in line. That is, in a route navigated as route. It might be different (it likely is) for routes navigated as track. There is a technical reason for this assumption, but that is beyond the scope here. So my question to you is: do you have "navigate route as track enabled" by any chance, or are you navigating a route planned on a map other than here (those are navigated as track by default, even without the feature enabled).
