Suggestion for mobile app (battery saver)
-
Coming from the Scenic app, there are a few things I’m used to and some like what I’m about to mention would be a great addition to the MRA mobile app.
While navigating on Scenic, there’s an option for “battery saver” which reduces strain on the mobile phone, battery and display, it’s a setting that can be turned on/off or on auto. Instead of me trying to explain it and some MRA members saying I’m not clear enough, have a read for yourself on this exact feature here
Despite my iphone always being charged while mounted on my quadlock, this battery saver feature has reduced the strain on my mobile phone which is a lot more noticeable when the weather is really hot.
@KevN1k-0 I think its a nice idea but for me of very limited use as I could never trust a single direction arrow
very often the map data is incomplete & the navigation instructions will miss a turn,
without being able to see the map I would expect using a single direction arrow system I would be doing a lot of u-turns / deviations -
This could probably be a nice addition for anyone using his phone uncharged. But to be honest, I do not experience any "strain" on my own phone, and I wonder how much impact it would have.
@Con-Hennekens well jumping to MRA from Scenic, I can tell you i saw a very noticeable difference! It was a hot day and my phone notified me of stopping the charge because it was overheating. In all the years I've been using Scenic, that only happened to me once and the battery saver feature was set to "off", never occurred after that so to me it's pretty much a crucial feature.

It doesn't stay black for the whole trip, only between turns that are longer than X between each. Get the app, try it and you'll see for yourself.

@KevN1k-0 I think you misunderstand

the app can only change back to the map when it knows IF there is a turn coming
very often the map data does not tell the app there is a turn on the route because the map data is bad or incorrectthe only way you know there is an unreported turn is if you can see the map
this happens a lot on very small rural roads, it is not such a problem on main roads as the map data is a lot betterwhy this is important to me is I often lead groups & we have a policy for fun of the leader has to buy the coffees or beers for every u-turn, it can get expensive if many mistakes are made

I don't think its a bad idea, it is just one that won't work for me

@Brian-McG I plan routes, create group rides and lead group rides as well, been using Scenic for the past 3 years with well over 36,000 kilometres and have had zero problems.
If you have this many incorrect map data then maybe you should look into a better provider?
Very rarely have I ever encountered an “unreported” turn and when it did, it was user “error”, in example, I didn’t put enough waypoints or vias, the itinerary is fine once created but when you start the ride, the app sometimes change course, and that is the same with over a handful of apps I’ve tested over the years so now I put more waypoints/vias to make sure, aside from this, I’ve never encountered such unreported turns but I have to specify I don’t do off road and stick to back country roads most of the time, hasn’t been a problem here in eastern Canada but maps aren’t as accurate for every part of the world.

I doubt Canada has anywhere near as extensive a rural road network as France
Canada my have many miles of road but not as many options
the unreported turn or missing direction is not that unusual in France
sometimes it is because they have rearranged the priority of the roads sometimes it just bad map dataIf you have this many incorrect map data then maybe you should look into a better provider?
there are only a few map data providers in the world & I have tried several,
Here happens to be one of the biggest for navigation systems & was the provider to Scenic till Here decided to shaft its customers with massive price hikes
Can't find who Scenic is using now but they have migrated away from Here
would be interesting to know who they are using now as this is something I wish MRA would also do
I will give Scenic a look

Scenic uses OSM

@KevN1k-0 Overheating has been, and apparently still is, a common problem for at least 2-3 yrs already. It apparently is a 'HERE' problem, that has gotten attention, however, never fully seems to be resolved. Anytime it gets to ± 25degC, and using MRA Nav, the phone starts to overheat, the screen dims and the app becomes unusable - whether or not the phone is/was fully charged at the beginning or not.
Many improvements have, and continue to be made - unfortunately, the overheating one seems extremely difficult to overcome.
Good luck with your suggestion!

@GT-JWR thanks for the info, I did notice the screen dim on my last ride as it was hot and the MRA app became slow and laggy. Now that you mention it, I do remember trying MRA a couple years ago and I believe I ditched it due to this.
Scenic had HERE for some time before moving to OSM but I never had any overheating issues with Scenic with the battery saver.

@KevN1k-0 a riding buddy switched to Scenic a few years back (because of lingering issues with MRA) when they were using Scenic - he has not experienced extreme overheating when using the app then, or now with OSM.
...trying to keep the faith and ride it through.....

You can solve the overheating problem by positioning your smartphone so that its back is exposed to the breeze, fitting a 1 mm thick aluminium plate and placing it between the case and the back of the phone.
Power it via a cable, not wirelessly. If necessary, make a special case with additional cooling fins fitted to dissipate the heat.Another solution is to buy a good-quality second-hand refurbished smartphone, then stick a Quadlock in the centre of the back. Next, apply cooling fins with heat-conductive thermal paste above and below the Quadlock.
