I have used MRA for two years on fairly long trips of around 2500 miles each. For the most part it has been fine but I still think I can get more out of it.

A couple of problems arise...firstly I always use shaping points except start /finish which are waypoints but from time to time the nav 6 decides it knows better and deviates to its own route. My thought process is that perhaps I should use more waypoints in the route so it must follow it exactly! Is that correct! Secondly I plan my routes using google maps on MRA so would it make any different if i used Garmin here on MRA, are the algorithms the same on garmin MRA as Nav 6.

@Colin-Hodgkinson The Google map is an overlay map, therefore you are not planning your route on it. For your Nav 6 you should be using the HERE planning map ( not overlay).

I use Garmin devices along with MRA a ZUMO XT and a 340 and 390. I've found that GPX 1.1 works better than 1.2 as you can see the shaping points as little blue dots on the Garmin devices. I tend to put a shaping point on every road I want to be on. If you are doing a circular route and download it as 1.2 and only P
put a start and finish waypoint in, then if you go off route the nav will bring you back to the end waypoint. If you have plenty of shaping points and use 1.1 the nav will bring you back to the route. I usually put a waypoint at the farthest point in a circular or out and back route so that the Nav always navigates to the farthest position on the route. I also tend to turn off auto recalculate and just navigate myself back to the purple line and/or make the track visible on the map so that I can see if the intended route is being deviated from.

@Colin-Hodgkinson, let's honor the correct terminology:

          • shaping points AND via points are both waypoints
          • a shaping points is a waypoint that allows automatic skipping if you don't "hit" it
          • a via point is a waypoints that does NOT allow auto skipping, since it is a place you definitely want to visit

Yes, shaping points are intended for forcing the route over the roads you wish to ride. Don't overdo it though. Take Nick his advice too.

I am just an enthusiastic MRA user, and hope you will be one too!

@Nick-Carthew Hi, Not sure I fully understand. If you use google maps and click to garmin it is the same map with the same waypoints. Surely its only the gpx 1.1 or 1.2 that load onto nav 6.

The planning map is the data on which the route calculation is made (and of course it has its own default visual map).
The map overlay is a layer with visual map only. You can choos the google msp overlay, but your route is still calculated over the chosen "main" map.
