I'm about to do a weekend trip into Death Valley, which has no cell coverage. I've created 2 routes, 1 for the trip to Death Valley and 1 for a Death Valley loop. The 1st route will start off with cell coverage while getting to Death Valley, and the 2nd route completely in Death Valley with no cell coverage.

So to my question - on my first route getting to Death Valley, do I need to stop and specifically turn on Offline Navigation before getting into Death Valley?
And for my 2nd route without any cell coverage, I assume I'll definitely need Offline Navigation turned on?

      Is this all correct? Thanks!

@Ron-Z Ensure that you have offline access to maps of all the areas you'll be passing through. Additionally, it's essential to download the planned routes to your phone, making sure they are also available offline. Naturally, for the second route, you won't have access to the server where the routes are stored.

@Ron-Z, it is safe to enable offline navigation also for your first route. It's helps you to gain trust in that it works 😉 Before you enable it:

          • download all areas you will be passing, like @Rob-Verhoeff says
          • make your routes available for offline use. To do that, don't press navigate after you select a route, but press the download arrow and choose "Make available for offline use"
          • enable offline mode in the app settings
          • when you start a route, do that from the downloads folder (available from the profile menu)

The app works just fine in offline mode, when these steps are followed. Put your phone in flight mode to simulate no coverage, and try all this before you leave on the trip.

@Ron-Z The only thing you miss with offline navigation is realtime traffic information. I doubt you need that in Dead Valley 😁

Thanks all! Yes, I do have the routes and maps downloaded to my iPhone.

Also, I'm going to be using MRA Next on CarPlay on a new Carpuride 7" screen I just received. Is there anything I should know about this?
If I start the route on the phone, is it okay to close to app once it's up in CarPlay, or just leave it running in the background with the phone screen off?

This will really be my first time using MRA Next on a ride, I guess I should have gave it a good testing before this, but reasons... 😁
I do have the BMW Connected App TFT navigation on my 2022 K1600 GTL, so I can use that as backup if things don't go as planned for whatever reason.

              Best regards,
              Ron

@Ron-Z Translate I have no experience with CarPlay on the motorcycle. For now, you can only start the created routes from your phone. After that, you can put your phone in your pocket. I have no idea what that does to the battery because I only use CP wired in the car. Power supply is then not a problem, and I don't have to worry about battery drain. Nonetheless, I wish you a fantastic trip in advance!

@Rob-Verhoeff Thanks! The phone will be charging in the bike's compartment, so no worries there. When using CarPlay, do you shut the phone's screen off, or just leave MRA running in the foreground?

@Ron-Z you can close the screen.

@Ron-Z the screen can be off. With the iPhone battery drain (and subsequent heat generation as a result) issue still not resolved, it will be interesting to hear your feedback of the app/CarPlay experiences! Ride safe!

I'm not denying that it's not the case, but it's very individual. Personally, I don't have any trouble with it. Not in the car connected to my CP and not on my bike when I use the phone as a navigation device.

I echo what @Rob-Verhoeff said, no battery issue with my iPhone 11 on a wireless QuadLock charger. My wife also has no battery issue with her iPhone SE and wired usb cable.

                            @Nick-Carthew @rob-verhoeff sure wish I had y'all's good fortune.

If the ambient temp stays below ~70degF, the over heat problem is not terrible, however, now that the ambient temps are regularly 80degF and above, the combination of battery useage the app uses and the temperature, the phone screen dims and is barely visible. 😞

@GT-JWR Yes, I can imagine that warmer temperatures would put a different slant on it.

@GT-JWR My phone will be charging in the bike's compartment, and there's a fan in there to help keep things cool. I'll be using the Carpuride W702 CarPlay screen which is made for the elements, so no worries about overheating and not being able to see the screen.
