One of the reasons I would like to see expansion beyond being able to search just the route expert routes is that I have set up my own libraries of passes in the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees. I'd like to choose a point and ask what routes are near by so that I can see what passes are close by and plan a route that includes a number of those passes. Without this option I have to know in advance what passes there are near to a given point then go looking for those passes through a very long list.

You could switch on the Mountain Saddle POIs to see nearby mountain passes.

Thanks for the suggstion by it's not really viable on two counts. To demonstrate the issues look at at the "holy trinity" passes of Furka, Grimsell and Susten. You have to be zoomed in so close to see the saddle icon on Furka you can't even see both ends of the pass. If you start to look for Grimsell an Susten there are many other sadle way points you have to "ignore", but only once you've looked at them to see if they are of interest.
