I have been following the development of MyRoute for a number of years but, as a fan - and pretty proficient user - of Garmin’s MapSource and then BaseCamp, I had no great need of MyRoute. All this changed when I bought my Garmin XT with its very good Bluetooth capability for route transfer. That this also coincided with BaseCamp becoming very flakey on my Mac (it used to be very reliable) persuaded me it was time to give MyRoute a proper go.

I am definitely very pleased with it.

It is proving 100% reliable on my Mac, my iPad and my iPhone. The ability to see the route in say, HERE and in Michelin maps is excellent, as is the tool to see the road in Google’s Street View.

As with any new software (I am no IT wizard) I did make some simple innocent mistakes at first but the learning curve was not too long nor too painful. For anyone coming to MyRoute for the first time, to learn it, I found it best to:

    A. Create a ‘Test’ folder just to try things out. I also used this to experiment sending routes to my XT (via Garmin Drive) and into the BMW Connect app.

    B. Use My`Route to create a bunch of routes that I will use, which forced me to be careful and to learn more. Practice makes perfect, I guess.

    C. Follow some good advice from other MyRoute users from within UKGSer’s GPS forum (where I am a moderator) along with helpful tips on the internet, including MyRoute’s own forum / help pages and very good video guides.

If it has one disadvantage it’s that, being Cloud based, if you delete something it’s gone forever. Anything really important I’d back up somewhere. I use DropBox and iCloud, though I guess there are lots of other options. That, along with the ease of using an iPad or iPhone to download a back-up makes life a lot easier than carting a MacBook around.

    All the best,

    Richard
