if you transfer routes from MRA, in any way, to an XT, make sure that recalculation AND traffic information is turned off in advance. Otherwise, your Garmin will recalculate the route in a way you didn't intend.

For clarification, you do not have to turn traffic information completely off. All that is necessary is to disable the option that avoids traffic delays automatically. This will stop auto recalculation. It's described in the XT Users Manual:

      Selecteer Alternatieve route, indien beschikbaar.
      Selecteer Ga!.

Dus uitzetten

By default, the device calculates the optimal route to automatically avoid traffic jams. If you have disabled this option in the traffic settings (Traffic Settings), you can manually view traffic information and avoid traffic jams.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. If you import a GPX route from a routplanner (MRA, Basecamp, whatever), on import, the XT will calculate according to your waypoint placements and other setting avoidances (dirt roads, etc) if those come into play. As part of this, Traffic is not considered in any way shape or form.

So what it says there is switch off.

What this says is that if you're stuck in traffic, and you have automatic traffic recalculation turned off in XT settings, you have the option of manually selecting an alternate route, if presented/available. If you select that option, the XT will recalculate. If you don't, your route will remain as-is, and you'll stay the course. Nothing happens without your intervention.

I think what you're missing is that (1) the runtime presentation of Traffic information, and (2) possibly selecting an alternate route in a heavy traffic situation, are two completely different things. If enabled, Traffic is a real-time service which is always available to you. Traffic recalculations are configurable, meaning nothing happens unless you choose it through setting options. Up front GPX route calculations on import into the XT have nothing to do with traffic at all. Unless I'm mistaken, that's what you seem to be implying.

If the route has been imported AND started and you have traffic information turned on, the Garmin will consider the entire route and if there is an item regarding traffic information somewhere on that route, the Garmin will recalculate the route of.

This is not always true. If you're running a route imported from a GPX, the XT will not automatically recalculate due to traffic unless you leave the default "automatic recalculate" in place. From the XT Manual:

            Optimize Route
Enables the device to use optimized alternate routes automatically or upon request

The key is to change the setting to "upon request". There many/many settings that should be updated when configuring an XT, and this is just one of them.

To the best of my knowledge, there are only two XT Settings for situations that can trigger real-time route recalculation:

            1. Off-Route
            2. Traffic

Both are configurable to be prompted before anything happens. I always configure "prompted" in settings to have total control over the situation. I live in possibly the most traffic congested area of the USA (Los Angeles), and although alerted, I've never requested a Traffic recalculate. I have my phone mounted next to the XT, and always run Google Maps when riding through urban areas for the best possible Traffic info. That's a different story, but it's a much better approach than depending on any other service for alternate route situations.

In any case, I hope this clears things up.

Traffic and Closures, even though the info comes from the same place, are treated differently. You can configure Traffic to either auto-recalculate in which case your GPX1.2 route will probably be destroyed depending on your routing or prompted and then it's your own doing. My advice would be to treat traffic warnings with suspicion anyway.

Closures still need Traffic to be enabled to be seen and acted upon but there is no option for auto/prompted - your route will be recalculated and often disastrously with Zumos older than the XT2. To clarify, even if you have Traffic as prompted, closures will recalculate your route.

It's no help to those with older Zumos but the XT2 seems to offer a more localised road closure diversion with GPX1.2. With GPX1.1, I think it depends where your shaping points are. If there is one within the closure, it may have to be skipped on your Zumo screen.

That's what I've been saying in my last few posts. The concept hasn't been sinking in. It's an XT Navigation Setting -- you either turn Auto on, or you handle it yourself. It's completely under rider control.

For closures, I don't know. No personal experience for me. Actually, it's usually the opposite situation where a road is closed and the XT doesn't know about it. In any case, there definitely isn't a Navigation setting to deal with the situation. But if you've experienced automatic closure recalculation, I'll take your word for it. It doesn't make sense to me how it would do that real-time, but...... I'll have to try that out on a road that's closed and see what happens.

I realise this is for XT but with my XT2, I do have Traffic enabled and do not allow it to auto-optimise. Road Closures which was the original post are still acted upon by my Zumo. With GPX1.1 they are deviated around fairly locally between the shaping points surrounding the closure. However, if there are any shaping points within the closure, it seems they need to be manually skipped on the Zumo screen otherwise you'll still be guided there. I think GPX1.2 offers an even better solution and just auto-guides you around the closure locally without destroying your whole route.

This is all obviously dependent on the closures being notified to HERE mapping. Definitely no guarantees there, especially for night time closures as we recently found. Options you do have in this case are to manually map read your way round the closure or edit the route on screen and add shaping points (1.1 only as this would force a total route recalculation with 1.2) or even a mileage avoidance which can work well.

I wanted to add this comment in case anyone is offering a solution that is XT2/3 only. Reading this and other forums it seems that the XT1 (which I've never owned but have friends that do) is more like the older Zumos in its Traffic/Closures handling.
