@MotoCon by clunky, I mean it seems slow, and some of the roads in my area don't show up. As well as when I pass waypoints on the navigation, they stay on the map or the app tries to navigate a different way than I have planned out on the route creator. I am in America and this app seems to be based out of europe where it would get more support and better navigation. Over in the states most people rely on IOS or Android devices. So I was asking for recommendations for a device. I noticed in the route creator that it mentions Tom Tom and HERE devices. So I was looking to purchase one if it was good and price was reasonable.

@Matt-Anderson-0, The app does not seem slow to me at all. Maybe it is your iPhone? I don't have any Apple stuff, but friends do and I never heard the term "slow" from them. If you hate slow, I would certainly stay away from TomTom or Garmin products...

I am just an enthusiastic MRA user, and hope you will be one too!

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebar to the saddle.

You are clearly biased against Garmin and your statement demonstrates the fact perfectly. The latest XT3 devices are highly regarded for their speed of operation. Specifically:

The new capacitive touchscreens mean that panning, map scrolling, pinching-to-zoom, and typing on the screen etc. happen quickly and fluidly.

Routing and dynamic re-routing is faster than MRA on my phone.

Every rider I have met with an XT3 comments about its great performance. Performance is also called out as a positive in every online review video I have watched.

I find your comment to be disingenuous and misleading given the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I can't comment on TomTom devices as I have no experience of, or interest in them.

@Stevedo-6-0 Everything you posted above regarding the XT3 is factually correct. Literally every function is lightning fast. It's a game changer in the GPS world.

I was out on a ride yesterday, running a route on my XT3 and on MRA phone is parallel. While I had no major complaints about the MRA phone app, the XT3 off-route functionality was faster and more fluid. Despite the continuous improves to the MRA app, there are HW speed differences between a dedicated GPS and a phone app that can probably never be completely bridged.

Regardless, it does a disservice to the navigation community to try to push one product at the expense of others when the facts are just wrong. Hopefully, it was simply ignorance based on not knowing the current state of Garmin devices.

@Stevedo-6-0, I will gladly admit that I have no experience with an XT3 (and that will be permanent. I do have experience with multiple Zumo's before XT, and they were always terribly slow. And that's not really a surprise given the hardware they chose for their products. I have spoken two friends that actually did have an XT3. They both sold it off quickly because they were slow, and because they are terribly complicated to put routes on, which often also get frumbled during import.

I will also gladly admit that Zumo's have some advantages. Like you said, glove operation is so much better then on a phone. The active mount I consider a pro also. And their usable duration is also much higher then any phone. But I am just glad that for the price of 1 XT3 I can buy 3 Android phones, so the latter is no real problem for me.

No I am not biased against Garmin (I use their outdoor products too), but for navigation of motorbike routes I am certainly biased towards a phone with a great app like MRA, or any other app you can widely choose from. And with reason 😉

This sounds a bit like you are pushing one product at the expense of others. And no I am not up to speed ( 😉 ) on the current state of Garmin devices. Also I am not pushing anything, I am just giving my opinion. I literally don't know anyone anymore who can show me a modern Zumo. They all went the phone route. But obviously they must all have been biased against Garmin products 😉

The "current status of the latest MRA Next Navigation" is what's available to the MRA public. That's what I, and most other license holders, have access to. The Beta for the next release probably has all kinds of goodies in it, but that has nothing to do with the current release of the app.

On the other side of that coin, you have no idea what advances the Garmin XT3 offers relative to the XT that you have some familiarity with. Technology is in constant flux. We can only discuss the here and now. Certainly, not what's in Beta and not available yet. In that regard, what I stated is accurate.

I'm not pushing anything. I'm simply responding to your statement of "If you hate slow, I would certainly stay away from TomTom or Garmin products... It's a factually incorrect statement regarding the current Garmin motorcycle GPS -- the Zumo XT3. Opinion should be based on real experience, which by your own admission, you have none.

I'm rooting for the next iteration of the MRA app. It's amazing the progress the development team has made over the past few years. I occasionally ride the app head-to-head with my Garmin to gauge progress, as I coincidently did just yesterday. The MRA app is getting better, but objectively it's not 100% there. That's my opinion, which some may or may not agree with. But I do actually use both, which hopefully gives my opinion some credibility.

It does, thank you, but in my view it does not compare to the flexibility of a phone.

The Planner is Gold. Whenever I get the chance, I push the Planner as the best desktop option available for creating routes. I'm certain I've sold many subscriptions on behalf of MRA.

And I agree with the flexibility of a phone. I run different phone navigation apps (inRoute, OsmAnd) during the non-summer months because it's sometimes a more convenient choice. Otherwise, a dedicated GPS is a more effective choice. The summers in the Southwest USA are brutally hot, and a longer ride will invariably shut a phone down as the device tries to protect itself. It's not just an MRA thing -- it applies to any app. It's a very real phenomena.

As I mentioned earlier, I do want to see the app to succeed. I'll continue to do comparative tests to my XT3 to gauge progress. I bought a lifetime subscription back in 2023, and I want to see a return on that investment. 😊 When the MRA app gremlins related to skipping waypoints (as well as a few other rough spots) finally get ironed out, it will probably reach consideration for real use. I'm confident it will get there.

Good. An acknowledgement that using the phone for navigation has its limitations. Progress. 👍

The lesson is that no single solution is perfect. That's why I ride with my phone mounted on the handlebars to the left of my Zumo XT3 mounted in the BMW center cradle. The duo covers just about every navigation scenario I might hit.

The test of any solution isn't how it operates when all conditions are perfect. It's how effective it operates when things go wrong, or if there is an unanticipated shift in plans. At least that's my criteria for setting out into the riding world.
