Map image in Safari: WebP selection produces PNG content

I have been testing the map-image options in Safari on 20 October.
The Poster layout worked well, with the route title and statistics below the map. “All waypoints” included the shaping points, and the Map only option produced a useful clean illustration. PNG and JPEG downloads both worked in my checks.
When I selected WebP, the downloaded filename ended in .webp, but checking the file itself showed that its content was PNG. I reopened the dialog, selected WebP again and repeated the download, with the same result in my check.
Is this an expected Safari fallback? If so, could the download use the matching PNG extension, or could WebP be shown as unavailable where it cannot be encoded?
Selecting PNG or JPEG directly provides a working alternative in my tests.
