north up
-
Is an otion "north up" display foreseen in the new MyRoute-app? Right now there isn't in the Navigation app! I know most people prefer the "track up" display, but don't ask me why, I don't
-
@LAGRANGE, you got me intrigued!
-
I miss this option as well. In google maps you can lock the map to always display north up. The pointer only changes position, and the map stays fixed.
When you ride in the mountains with hairpin turns it is quite annoying that the map is dancing as well. Of course you keep your eyes on the road, but you see in the corner of your eye this movement. Plus I missed one or two times my next exit because of this behaviour.
It is a feature request.
Side note:
I do like the navigation + planner. I use it for a couple of years now and enjoy making routes + riding it. -
i also like the north-up option, but only when riding in the mountain twisties, any other time it is not necessary to me.
-
I too would like an option for North up that could be switched on/off during a journey.
-
-
I would probably never use it and wonder why people would. But it seems a logical thing to have. I believe most navigation tools have that. Could be an extra option in the compass tap sequence perhaps.
It would be interesting to know for what circumstances people would want to use a north-up map.
-
I think "north-up" makes it easier to see if you're going in the right general direction and to orientate yourself on the map, as it also matches what you see during planning. However, it doesn't make much sense when combined with a 3D view.
I use both (simultaneously): using TomTom Go, I have the 3D view (track up) on the main (CarPlay) display and the 2D map (north up) on my phone. Haven't tried this with MRA yet.
-
@Herko-ter-Horst, Yes, I agree with that. But for that general orientation we have the route-overview, accessed by a long press on the compass. That actually IS north-up (but you can rotate it by hand).
I was under the impression that TS would like the zoomed navigation-window itself in a north-up mode. But maybe I am overthinking that.
-
@LAGRANGE very much agree. On twisty roads can get disoriented in terms of direction and far prefer anchoring the map north up and seeing my direction of travel move accordingly. I think this is a gap and a reason Iām finding myself using other apps still.
-
@Con-Hennekens sorry for mu late answer! As far as I tried, the route overview is indeed "north up", but as soon as you start driving, the screen come back to the navigation view, I mean "trackup"?!
-
On 22 Jan 2024 I received the below reply from MRA (Nick Carthew RouteXpert Senior):
The fixed North-Up view is something that has been discussed but as far as I know there has been no announcement that it will be implemented just yet.
A topic regarding this was started in the MRA Community Forum in May '23, you can read it here and maybe add your name to those that would like to see a North up option.Herewith I'm adding my request for a fixed map North-Up option while navigating.
Last year I purchased "MyRouteApp' for the purpose of helping colleagues within my motorcycle-club, plus for my own curiosity and (if once needed) as a back-up system. Until now I don't use the program myself, mainly because it can't be set to map North-Up orientation.
I'm accustomed to travel with a paper map on the (motorcycle)tank and still use that next to GNSS navigation. A 'rotating' map on a satellite navigation product is a 'no-go' for me.
Just imagine observing both maps (nav & paper) at the same time, it would lead me into schizophrenia. -
@tony_r, you could also ask the printer of the paper map to print it track up...
Jokes aside, I think that not many people still use north up, but it seems like an easy thing to do, and any serious navigation app should have it. I imagine an extra toggle option on the short-tap compass icon. I don't miss it, but I would probably still use it under circumstances, when available.
-
@Con-Hennekens I normaly use the north up view, as I would like to see easily in which direction (north, south, west, east) I am driving.
It is helpfull if you are do some scouting trips and/or hit major deviations.Greetings

+1 for NORTH UP! For many reasons.
Should definitely be an option!
Given the complexity of the App for phone navigation, this should really be an easy one!
It really is super annoying not having it when riding the super curvy roads.
It is dizzying!
I just stop using the app.... -
-
@Con-Hennekens Hahahaha
My peripheral vision is too good to ignore the jumping map -
@Peter-Schiefer Maybe... To each his own... That's why I feel there should be an OPTION for North UP.
As for me - I am also a Private Pilot, and I am used to seeing the world North UP I need to always understand my orientation in space...
I understand the confusion point for some (my wife, for one, demands track up for her navigation setting).... I always laugh at her
If the Nav gives you voice directions - just follow it.... right? -
@Peter-Schiefer, Yes, people come in two flavors, those who understand maps, and those who rotate them...

A north up mode will be added in 4.1.3: https://forum.myrouteapp.com/post/45680
