I have an old Kyocera phone that I use only for navigation and, when I tried to load the new app, I get a message saying it can’t be loaded on my device. Does that mean I have to buy a new phone.

Also, on my ipad, when I try to use the forum to past a question, every time I type the letter “n” the page jumps back to the previous page. It’s difficult to write a message without the letter “n.”

New to you, not new new. A scratch or two makes no difference when mounted on a bike/in a car. Or ones off eBay with the mic not working, or a bust SIM holder and then WiFi hotspot it your 'real' phone, etc.

There are plenty of older secondhand Androids with decent screens, memory and CPU.

Android 6 is the absolute minimum that will run, but I suggest somewhere around Android 10-11 is a sensible minimum version to pick, i.e. 3-4 years old. Any older and you'll find that one will become redundant quite quickly too - not because MRA is forcing you to a higher version, but because of Google's 'improved' APIs (with a raised minimum OS version), which will force MRA to move their minimum supported OS up.

Just for reference, the current Android version in 2023 is 13, with 14 due about September.

Just bought a Umidigi Bison pro with 6.5 screen and Android 12 for $200 US. It looks great on paper. I hope it’s as cool as it seems.

@artbone have the Bison 2. Works great for me. Brightness could be better, but is sufficient in broad sunlight.

You can buy an old phone and use it especially for navigating, but why should you?

I am currently using MRA Next on my android samsung in the car, and sometimes when walking or with the motorcycle.

My next phone is going to be rugged (Doogee, CAT, Samsung) intended to be used in an industrial outdoor environment where it suffers a lot). That should be more than enough for the motorcycle as well?

It is not difficult, it is easy, it's a hobby

@Drabslab Oh, I'm all for using just one device (I don't own a satnav), but sometimes its nice to use an old phone which you don't care too much about. I use a new Samsung Galaxy A54 and an old iPhone 8 with a knackered battery - but plugged into the bike so it's fine.

In terms of ruggedness, you don't need to buy a special. Both are well sealed against dust & rain, as are most modern phones - both the Samsung and the iPhone 8 are rated IP67.
Stick them in a case and they're fine for wet weather riding and the occasional butter-fingered drop.

However, it's wise to add an anti-vibration mount if you use a higher-end model that has a camera module with image stabilisation. I've had to buy one for the Samsung.
