Here Maps Calculation - Bug?
-
I'm planning some routes in Scotland for the summer, switiching between the different Map calculations I expect to see some differences however on at least one route I see a significant difference between TomTom and Here calcuation. On further investigation it seems that the difference is in fact within the Here Map calcation.
My route goes from A to B via 3 waypoints but comes back directly from B to A. The Tom Tom routing comes back a different way, whereas Here retraces the same route for the return as the outward journey, thats fine and one of the benefits of being able to see both options, though Here seemed suspiciously quick compared to TomTom. Now if I look at the Here waypoint information it takes 3:06 and 110 Miles to get from A to B but only 60 miles and 1:20 to return by the same route. I think this is a bug but happy to be enlightened.
Heres a link to the route

Hi @Ian-James. Thank you for sharing your route. Wow, that is a strange anomaly. I have absolutely no idea why the time and distance is so way off for the return leg. I will make sure that the boffins at MRA HQ are made aware of this. Thanks again.

@Ian-James I added an intermediary route point between 5 and 6, this has changed the return time and distance to something more believable.
-
And a second intermediary route point (7) has made it even more believable.

Thanks for looking at this, glad I'm not the only one who's puzzled - but I have a theory.
I think it may have something to do with ferries. My guess is that the route calculation for time is based on the time from landing to the next waypoint and not from waypoint to waypoint (irrespective of any allowance for the ferry crossing). In all cases the route goes across the Corran ferry - a short hop across the loch, but without a waypoint on either side suddenly its a 20 minute trip wheras in my original example the journey was 1:45, with the section from the ferry landing to Strontian coming in at 20 minutes!
So to me it looks like something is causing the time calculation to disregard the time taken from a waypoint to ferry embarkation, so it you put waypoint before and after a ferry everythinbg appears as you would expect (though I don't think Here makes allowance for the ferry trip in its time calculations)
If nothing else it might save some Garmin users from unexpected late arrivals! -
@Ian-James
PS time and distance calcs appear to be affected. -
The problem has been identified and a fix should be applied by the end of the day.

@Ian-James Thanks for raising the issue. It is the same problem as mentioned here: https://forum.myrouteapp.com/topic/3228/ferry-time
Your suggestion about transit duration / distance not being accounted for was correct. The issue has been resolved and a fix will be published at the end of the day.
I used your route to test!

You wouldn't get that from Garmin or TomTom.
