Refinement of 'Skip waypoints'
-
A minor suggestion for an extra Functional Navigation setting:
- skip waypoints with no pause, but keep ones with pauses
The logic:
-
a waypoint with no pause is likely to be just 'shaping' the route to go exactly where the user wants
-
a waypoint with a pause is likely to be a real stop (petrol, food, viewpoint, etc)
In the Settings menu:
Skip ALL waypoints ☐
Skip generic waypoints ☐(The generic skip is subservient to the ALL option. And 'generic' is not a neat word but I couldn't think of another one )
A more general way of distinguishing shaping waypoints from real stops/sites might be not to skip waypoints that have custom information added to them (pause, name, etc), and not just pauses.

@richtea-0 I rarely use the time delay or add data to a WP. I like skipping WP but think Viapoints should require a manual skip.

@Doug-Robinson Ah! Being a relative novice, I didn't know they were called 'viapoints'. That seems to be a Garmin term, right?
But that's what I mean - ones you've actively changed, not just a dropped point:
Skip ALL waypoints ☐
Skip non-Viapoints ☐ -
@richtea-0 The app only auto skips waypoints, and no vianpoints ( symbols). Therefore you shall make all your non-skippable waypoints, via points. Make it a habit of turning your fuel stops and or other must pass waypoints a via point and you're golden.
You do not want the app to auto skip a via point since those typically are used for must pass or must visits. Auto skipping a via point beats the purpose of what it is intended to do; make sure you can proceed with your route to end up at your destinations which most of the time, as a general workmanship, are set as via points.
If somehow you cannot reach your coffee stop (set as ) in your preplanned manner, your suggestion would skip your coffee stop in its entirety haha. We all know how we go about missing coffee breaks, right?

@richtea-0 Viapoints, indicated by a hand like the start and ends of a route, are considered as hard points that you want to navigate to. In the original Navigation app, it would automatically skip waypoints (also called shaping points) but not Viapoints. Scheduled stops for breaks, gas, lunch etc would be identified as Viapoints.

@Doug-Robinson That would explain why I was fighting the 'Skip waypoints' at the weekend on a route shared by someone else - because quite a few were Viapoints. (Thanks for the education)

@richtea-0 I do like the idea but I don’t think we’ll do this
As explained in this thread it can be easily achieved by making sure those points with a pause duration are a viapoint Not skipping points with a pause duration is way less transparent and we currently don’t do anything with the pause duration in the app. Once we do, this might be a relevant suggestion again!
Thanks for the idea!

You may have seen this already - Great video
https://youtu.be/hbRh2mHdmeMAs for Garmin terms, I suppose it is like learning ancient Latin to better understand where our words come from.
